Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Who run the world? - Girls.
This seminar critically examines constructions of young womanhood in North American literature from the 19th century to the present. The figures we will discuss include the tomboy and the flapper, and topics encompass American feminisms, #blackgirlmagic and non-binary posthuman futures. Literary readings range from Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women (1868) and Harriet Jacobs’ Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl (1861) to contemporary post-apocalyptic fiction. Next to regular attendance and reading, in-semester tasks include attending a conference keynote as well as reading a novel independently and presenting your findings towards the end of term.

Please note that this will be a hybrid seminar with face to face sessions combined with online meetings.
