Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Contents: The seminar will focus on literary works of fiction and selected poems by a variety of contemporary authors from the English-speaking world, dealing with various aspects of cultural difference, cross-cultural encounters and the clash between cultures (colonizer vs. colonized). The texts discussed include Saul Bellow's celebrated novel 'Henderson the Rain King' (1958), short stories by Anglophone authors from different national and cultural backgrounds including Witti Ihimaera (Maori writer), T. C. Boyle, Billy O' Callaghan, Salman Rushdie, Eoin McNamee, and selected poems by Australian Aboriginal authors.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Assessment: regular attendance throughout the semester, active participation in the discussions in class; submission of one seminar paper in English (8,000 words; BA thesis 11,000 words), which must be an authentic work written by the participant individually (no group work!); one PPT presentation (individually or as a member of a group) of about 20 mins per speaker; a final essay (700 words+) to be written in class. - Deadline for submitting the seminar-paper: strictly at the appointed date (usually one week after the presentation unless stated otherwise). A feedback will be given within three weeks after submission.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Aims: To develop students' cross-cultural understanding and awareness of cultural identity and cultural difference; to provide students with in-depth knowledge of the given historical and cultural contexts of the works discussed; to advance students' interpretative skills and competence in writing academic research papers; to perfect the students' proficiency in written and oral English as well as their computer-based presentation skills.

Prüfungsstoff

Methods: Interactive teaching, computer-aided presentations; introductory lecture unit providing guidelines for the students' presentations and knowledge of various areas of cultural studies (notably the world-views of Australian Aborigines and the Maoris in New Zealand); interactive teaching units with students' presentations (PPT) and plenum discussions.

Literatur

Texts: Students are required to purchase a copy of Saul Bellow's 'Henderson the Rain King' (Penguin Classics); a 'Reader' containing the short stories and poems will be available from the Copy-Studio (1010 Schwarzspanierstrasse 10) early in October.
