124093 VK BEd 09.2: VK Linguistics and Language Education (2024S)

This course offers an insight into the concept of Extramural English (Sundqvist, 2009), which can be broadly defined as English contact outside of an educational setting. This English language contact can range from streaming English series on platforms like Netflix to reading English novels or listening to English music. After developing a basic understanding of the concept of Extramural English, models and theories of L2 learning, Global English and SLA concepts, such as age and motivation will be topicalized. Moreover, students will receive an overview of research already conducted in the area of Extramural English and it’s influence on language skills and systems, as well as considering how these insights could find their way into the L2 classroom.
After this initial input and discussion phase in which students are familiarized with a range of theoretical and methodological approaches for researching Extramural English, specific areas will be explored in more detail by the students. For the bachelor thesis, students will choose a specific theoretical and methodological perspective and will undertake an analysis of data collected (topic suggestions will be provided). BEd students who are not writing their bachelor thesis in this course will work on individual final assignments (VK project).
This course encompasses mini-lectures, on- & offline assignments, reading-based group work and discussion, and individual research leading to a presentation and final written paper (either project paper or bachelor thesis).
