Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This seminar will focus on Britain in the 1960s and explore the early stages of the British Tradition of Cultural Studies within a larger context. We will look at general overviews of the period, such as a BBC documentary, and explore the differences between public and personal memories of the period. We will look at filmic examples from the 1960s and work on audio-visual analysis from both a receptive and a productive angle. We will also explore 60s youth culture and try to examine the values and beliefs of the Mod, the Teds and the Rockers, among other Rebels Without A Cause. We will read key texts by the founding fathers of British Cultural Studies, such as passages from the writings of Raymond Williams. Other aspects we will explore are versions of dominant masculinities and femininities of the period, which will lead us to topics such as fashion and fashion photography. And finally women will take centre stage when we have a look at the early stages of British bands such as The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, and analyze screaming girls and women “under my thumb”.
