Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

What is science fiction? How is science fiction different from other kinds of cultural texts that include “speculation”? This course explores the evolution of the genre through some of the key sci-fi texts, including the TV series Westworld and the recent graphic novel adaptation of Octavia E. Butler’s Parable of the Sower. The course will examine how, through various tropes, works of science fiction emphasize sociocultural and political problems that we face in the real world. Air pollution and climate change, police brutality and anti-Black violence, ableism, sexism, xenophobia, and neocolonialism are the issues that sci-fi narratives predict, imagining the future – the twenty-first-century world. The course will meticulously engage with the scholarship in the field of science fiction to understand the history of the genre and the cultural, social, and political meanings of selected works of science fiction.
