This course will be taught by Visiting Lecturer Dr Christian Long, University of Queensland, Australia, in blocked form, from October to beginning of December. He will be teaching under the non-EU staff exchange programme set up between the University of Vienna and a number of prestigious overseas universities. Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
Where do we mean when we say "Hollywood cinema"? This course will explore the global reach of Hollywood cinema in literal terms, tracking the narrative locations (and sometimes shooting locations) of films from the 1950s through the 2010 such as, 'Around the World in 80 Days' (1956), 'The Great Race' (1965), 'The French Connection' (1971), 'Romancing the Stone' (1984), 'Interview With the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles' (1994), 'The Day After Tomorrow' (2004), 'Cedar Rapids' (2011) and some films of the students' own choosing.This seminar-style class will combine brief lecturer-delivered lectures and film screenings with student presentations (both solo and group), small group discussion, and full-class discussions of critical literature and films to investigate how Hollywood represents locations in the United States and beyond - and the relationships between those locations - to understand the contours of Hollywood’s imaginary geography of the world. We will combine an attention to the geography of films' narrative settings (perhaps with data visualizations) with more "standard" ideological criticism to combine film studies, geography/cartography, and digital humanities approaches. Themes that will occupy us throughout include the aesthetics and politics of geographic representation and the notion of "realistic" geography in film, and the meaning of one city or location playing another.We will meet for two two-hour sessions (with a break between the sessions), and there will be an optional film screening scheduled at another time in the week. These screenings are not required, but cinema-going is a public experience, and I would encourage you to attend the screenings with your classmates. To return you to the cinema’s working-class roots, talking to the screen and to each other will be perfectly acceptable during these screenings as it was before picture houses began to imitate the theatre.
