Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
Comics/Sequential Art produce meaning at the intersection of text and visual image. So what are these specific mechanisms and images, and how do comics use them in order to invade our daily realities and construct their own?

Participants will be asked to give oral presentations and hand in written assignments.

The course will tackle the following questions:
How do comics use specific cultural backgrounds/ information to produce meaning?
How important is the intertextual character of comics and graphic novels?
How do certain types of genre comics create and develop protagonist archetypes?
How do comics treat timportant topics , such as "identity", "the abject", "otherness" and "gender discourse"?

Prüfungsstoff
During this course students will receive an introduction into various genres of anglophone comics and critically discuss and analyze the realities mediated and constructed in these comics.
Students will be asked to read a selection of primary texts as well as selected articles from the list of secondary literature provided.
