Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Music and Poetry have had a long and fruitful relationship in Ireland, a relationship that remains relevant today as Irish writers continue to draw on musical sources for inspiration. In the first section of this module students will examine the historical relationship between music and poetry in Ireland placing a particular emphasis on the relationship of the work of Modern and contemporary poets, such as W.B. Yeats, Patrick Kavanagh and Seamus Heaney, to music and song. A further crucial aspect of Irish culture is sport and Ireland is one of the few countries where the dominant spectator sports are indigenous non-professional sports, in particular the Gaelic games of Gaelic football and hurling. Significant research has been done over the past twenty years on the important role Gaelic games and their promotion played in the construction and development of Irish nationalism and Irish identity, particularly since the foundation of the Gaelic Athletic Association 125 years ago in 1884. In the second half of this module students will explore sport's role in Ireland and how filmic depictions of these games have contributed to representations of Ireland abroad, while also facilitating the development of a distinctive Irish film culture.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

The aim of this course is to develop a more complex understanding of Irish culture and society among students through an examination of aspects of Irish literature, music, film and sport.

Prüfungsstoff

Team presentations, class discussion; classroom discourse will be supplemented by visual aids.
