Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This class deals with aspects of the trivial, the popular, the common, the ordinary, the banal and the everyday. In our readings we would like to explore meanings, roots and routes of mundane practices, texts and artefacts through the ages and how they, for example, relate to gender, class or race identities; language and communication; genre, media and technology; politics and power; local and global impacts, material and economic contexts. Integral part of the AR will be the Pursuing the Trivial Conference organised by Monika Seidl, Roman Horak and Barbara Maly. Participation is obligatory (1-2 June, details can be found under http://www.univie.ac.at/pursuingthetrivial/). You will have the unique opportunity to listen to a number of eminent critics in the field and get to know young scholars who devote their presentations on our topic.

Regular attendance, participation in class discussions of set readings, choice of additional tasks, conference report of Fashionable Queens, final written essay.

This class will provide you with a versatile toolkit to integrate the analysis of the everyday and ordinary into your study projects.

Prüfungsstoff

Small-group and all-class discussions of regular set readings, mandatory participation in Pursuing the Trivial Conference.
