Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This lecture course presents a survey on the history of literatures in English.

In the first part, there will be a short survey on
1) the periods of the history of British and American literature
and
2) on literatures in English which emerged in the postcolonial period.
This survey will include aspects such as socio-cultural contexts, the making of literary history, the literary canon etc.

In the second part, there will be a discussion and contextualisation of a selected text corpus relevant to be taught in the English classroom. This corpus will include texts from the periods and cultures presented in the first part of the lecture course.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

There will be a final written test at the end of the term covering the required reading and the issues discussed.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

The exam consists of 2 parts (with 20 points each) which both need to be positive.
Part 1: short and precise answers to some 15 questions
Part 2: well-structured coherent essay-like text (about 450 words)
minimum score to pass: 21 out of 40 points; 10.5 in each part
1: 40 - 36
2: 35.5 - 31.5
3: 31 - 26.5
4: 26 - 21
5: 20.5 - 0

The required reading and the topics covered in class.

Literatur

Shorter texts (poems, short stories, etc.) will be posted on the Moodle e-learning platform. The plays and novels to be bought and prepared for the second part will be announced in the first session.
