Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
The history of Ireland is in many respects a history of travel. However, Irish travel writing about foreign countries, particularly the many novels, journals, autobiographies, and travel books by Irish women writers to places as diverse as continental Europe, Africa, Asia, and South America, remains largely terra incognita for scholars and the general reading public. In this course, we’ll examine Irish women’s travel writing from the late nineteenth century to the present day, exploring the extent to which women’s travel writing reflected, embodied, or problematized a traditionally masculine mode of writing and experience as well as contributed to the making of individual and collective Irish identities.Close readings of primary texts will be supplemented by recent theoretical developments and critical methodologies (e.g. mobility studies, gender studies, postcolonial studies) as we consider, among other things, the effects of travelling and migration on (re)conceptualizations of gender, nationalism, and the embodied experience of space and time.A screening of the 2010 documentary "Who is Dervla Murphy?" will be held during the semester. In addition, an Irish travel writer may be invited to speak about her work.
