Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This one-semester postgraduate seminar course is devoted to methodological issues in African Studies research encompassing the fields of linguistics, literature, history and social science approaches. In the course we will deal with the following issues: how to gather data in the form of documents, interviews, questionnaires and observation protocols, how to organize and analysis it and how to present it in the text. Further, we will deal with the ethical dimension of doing research in an African Studies context.
Class interaction will be in the form of lectures, discussion of texts to be read before class, student presentations and computer-based electronic communications.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Assessment is by coursework, including a paper on methodological issues pertinent to the students field of study. If there are any students who dont have a clear field or topic of study yet, we will take them through a systematic process of developing a research proposal during the course.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Presentation of a concept paper in class: 25 %
Essay paper of about 10 pages: 60 %
Participation in discussions during the course: 15 %
