Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This course aims at giving the student a comprehensive introduction to important concepts and theories used in the description of syntax. We will explore a variety of issues and draw a large amount of data from African and other languages to observe the common principles and points of variation in syntactic structure within and across languages.

The course will help students to:
a. understand what comprises syntax, how it fits within the broader scope of linguistics and how to investigate it
b. develop a toolkit for studying African languages
c. hone analytical skills by formulating precise and explicit descriptive statements as well as making and evaluating arguments for/against specific analyses

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Course assessment will be either (i) in form of a written exam on the last day of the course or (ii) a term paper to be submitted on the last day of the course or shortly thereafter.

Prüfungsstoff

Assignments and tests may draw on materials covered in the lecture and assigned readings.
