Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Objective: This lecture aims to: 1) provide the means for a multidimensional understanding of Bhutanese history, culture and society in relation to Buddhism, and compared to the influential neighboring countries India and Tibet, and 2) to examine the role and significance of Bhutan and its Buddhism in our future society.
Contents: There are totally 9 lectures. (*Note that the contents of these lectures are flexible)
• Lecture 1: Introduction (relation among India, Tibet and Bhutan); Buddhism in India; Introduction of Buddhism from India to Tibet (7th-10th cen.).
• Lecture 2: Renaissance (11th-15th cen.), development (16th-21st) and current state of Buddhism in Tibet.
• Lecture 3: Introduction and development of Buddhism in Bhutan (7th-16th cen.) - History 1
• Lecture 4: Bhutan as a religious country (17th-19th cen.) - History 2
• Lecture 5: Bhutan as a secular country (19th-21st cen.) - History 3
• Lecture 6: Buddhist spirituality and Gross National Happiness in Bhutan
• Lecture 7: Politics and economy in Bhutan.
• Lecture 8: Problems in Bhutan (poverty, war, ethnic problems, etc.)
• Lecture 9: Traditional culture in Bhutan (art, dance, music, etc.)

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Assessment/Grade: Students are required to submit a short paper by the last lecture.
-Examination: students are required to submit a short paper.
-Theme: any theme about Bhutan.
-Methodology: you can refer to any medias such as books, journals, websites (such as wiki), but please mention the source where you got the information.
-Length: more than 400 words less than 2,000 words
-Deadline: 16th (Sun) December 2018
