Information
Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
Inhalt: More recently, primarily as a response to a felt push in 'globalisation', historians have started to think anew about approaches to post-colonial and post-national history. In this context 'global history' has re-emerged as a field of interest. From the point of view of African history it is often surprising where about the history of African societies is included in these new approaches. The lecture course attempts to situate the writing of African history in the context of these more recent efforts to provide readers with narratives of global history. It will pursue different agendas of global history and the place of Africa within it. And it will use African history to challenge, and reflect on, some of the basic agendas in writing different kinds of global history. The lecture course will be provided in both English and German. If there are students among you who ONLY SPEAK ENGLISH please indicate this to me (kirsten.ruether@univie.ac.at) as early as possible as in that case we will switch to English only approach.
Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel
There will be a 'Klausur' at the end of the course which you will pass if you have attended the lecture course regularly.
Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab
Students will be acquainted with different kinds of writing global and African history. They will learn to think conceptionally of the art they are pursuing.
