Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
The goal of this course is for students to gain proficiency in reading Arabic inscriptions, together with an ability to identify the rough time-frame of an inscription based on paleography and/or historical details in the text.After each class, students will be given as homework a photograph of an Arabic inscription to be translated. Students will take turns reading a portion of this inscription in the following class. It is not required that students submit a written translation of the inscription, though they may do so if they desire more detailed feedback from the instructor.
Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel
At the end of the semester, students will be given an inclass exam. This exam will consist of a photograph of an Arabic inscription. Each student is to transliterate and translate the text. It is permissible to use any dictionaries or grammars, as well as any power-points from class. No use of the internet is allowed, nor are students to attempt to track down a pre-existing translation of the text. More information on the exam will be posted on Moodle towards the end of the semester.
Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab
The end goal of this course is basic competence in reading Arabic inscriptions and the ability to translate simple texts with the help of the dictionary.Grading will be based on in-class participation and performance in the presentation and final exam. The final exam will account for 25% of the grade for the course.The grading system is as follows:
5 (0-52): not enough (not keeping up with the homework, poor performance in class and/or on the final exam)
4 (53-65): enough (homework and performance in in-class participation and on the final exam indicates some knowledge of the subject, but with much room for improvement)
3 (66-77): satisfactory (keeping up with the homework but without retaining information, homework and/or final exam passable but still not that great)
2 (78-90): good (keeping up with the homework, homework and/or final exam could be improved in terms of certain details but otherwise okay)
1 (91-100): very good (keeping up with the homework, homework and/or final exam has only minor errors, if any)

Prüfungsstoff
