Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Śāntideva’s Bodhicaryāvatāra on the Perfection of Insight (prajñā)

The Bodhicaryāvatāra by the Indian monk-scholar Śāntideva (fl. first half of the 8th c.) is one of the most important works of the Mahāyāna tradition. The seminar will focus on its ninth chapter on prajñā (insight), in which Śāntideva presents the Madhyamaka view and argues for its superiority over the views of other Buddhist schools as well as over non-Buddhist doctrines. Along with relevant verses from the Bodhicaryāvatāra, we will read and analyze selected passages from Prajñākaramati's extensive commentary on the ninth chapter. Prajñākaramati (late 10th to early 11th c.) relies heavily on Candrakīrti (7th c.) for the explanation of topics such as the two truths.
Participants will have the opportunity to improve their proficiency in scholastic Sanskrit and to deepen their understanding of Indian Madhyamaka. The seminar will also provide students of Tibetan Madhyamaka with an Indian anchor from which to assess later Tibetan scholars' presentations of the Madhyamaka view.
