Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
This course will examine practice texts (sādhana) related to the Hevajratantra coming from different lineages in order to understand the way tantric cycles function, how practice texts are related to the main text of a cycle, and how various traditions make different presentation choices. Examples of Indian and Tibetan sādhanas will be taken, with texts both in translation (English) and in original language (Tibetan). Particular emphasis will be laid on the two traditions that developed from the 11th century in Tibet in the Sa skya and bKa’ brgyud lineages, with more emphasis on the latter, which started in Tibet with the translator Mar pa Chos kyi blo gros. We will read together excerpts of the practice text he compiled as well as excerpts from several later texts of the same tradition in order to also understand the diachronic evolution of a tradition.
