Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

In this seminar, we will read and analyze selected passages on the theory of definition in early Tibetan epistemological works. The theory of definition deals essentially with the nature of and relation between the elements of a definition – the definiens (mtshan nyid), definiendum (mtshon bya) and definitional basis (mtshan gzhi) – and with the rules that warrant a correct definition. While Indian epistemology does not offer a methodical discussion on the topic, it figures as a core element of Tibetan epistemological treatises and becomes of hallmark of Tibetan scholasticism. In this seminar, we will start with a summarized presentation of this theory in a short treatise of unclear authorship entitled Tshad maʾi spyi skad cung zad bsdus pa, before moving to the more extensive discussion by the famous gSang phu master Phya pa Chos kyi seng ge (1109–1169), which constitutes the earliest available evidence of an extensive discussion of this theory.
Participants will gain knowledge of the early scholastic landscape and of an innovative development in the field of Buddhist logic and epistemology. The seminar will enable students who already have good knowledge of classical Tibetan to develop familiarity with the technical language and style of Tibetan scholastic treatises as well as skills in working with manuscripts in cursive script.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Participants are expected to weekly prepare comprehensively assigned text passages that will be read together and explained in class. One short written contribution (translation, essay, review of an article) is also required, as well as one oral presentation tied to the final paper. For the final paper (10-15 pages), participants will independently carry out the translation and analysis for a chosen excerpt. This translation will be accompanied by annotations and introductory remarks on the source, the author, and the topic.
