Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Summary:

In this overview and the accompanying tutorial sessions, students will be introduced to various topics and voices from the Maghreb. Representative works and translations in English, German and French by Tahar Ben Jelloun, Morocco (This Blinding Absence of Light, 2006); Assia Djebbar, Algeria (Durst, 2002); Habib Selmi, Tunisia (La Voisine du cinquième, 2022); Shatwan Najwa Bin, Libya (Catalogue of a Private Life: Short Stories, 2022); Aichetou Ahmedou, Mauritania (La couleur du vent: Il était une fois à Nouakchott, 2017) and Mbarek Ould Beyrouk (The Desert and the Drum, translation by Rachael McGill, 2019) will be discussed. Other themes such as the violence of/in history, the contemporary exploitation of natural resources, the violence of conservative systems, stages, and faces of social transformations, women’s agency, questions of desire, tensions, cruelty, and tenderness, etc, will be covered to throw light on the literatures from the Maghreb from different perspectives.

Goals

1. To introduce students to the breadth and wealth of ‘Maghreb’ literatures
2. To do a comparative ‘slow reading’ of works by selected writers
3. To foster a reflection on the limits of concepts such as ‘world literature’

Content

Reading and in-depth analysis of selected literary works, general and theoretical articles, book chapters, and video material.
