Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Content:
The content of this course is the teaching and learning of a linguistic variety of Modern Chinese that can be used in specialist contexts. We will identify and discuss structural patterns and lexical items typical of Chinese for specific purposes (often labelled: 行业术语,专用语,专业华语,专业汉语,。。。). The focus is on the practical use of specialized Modern Chinese (both written and oral) in a selection of professional domains like business and society, international relations, and the cultural industry.

Aims:
- to acquire the knowledge and develop the skills necessary to adapt to a wide range of specialist language
- to cope productively and receptively with specialized text types
- to practice strategies for mediating specialist texts, concepts, and communication; translation from Chinese to English and English to Chinese
- to communicate effectively in professional settings

Methods:
Analyzing texts and situations from textbooks and the World Wide Web. Practical application of the newly acquired specialist language.
Classroom work, pair work (closed and open pairs), group work; Flipped classroom techniques; Collaborative learning.
Project “mylingua”: Designing and leading a discussion on and with the specialist language of a chosen topic.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Assessment is based on:
- General participation (e.g.: individual class participation; individual preparation; tasks in Moodle using tools such as forum, WIKI, glossaries; quizzes): 10%
- Project “mylingua: participant”: Participation in the discussions organized by the experts and fulfillment of preparatory tasks in the fore-field: 15%
- Project “mylingua: expert”: Presentation of the individual topic and management of the discussion as the expert (including the timely submission of all preparatory work): 30%
- Written final test (on site, no aids permitted): 45%
All parts must be completed.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

The pass grade is 60%.
If you miss more than two classes you will receive a negative mark.
Grading scale:
100% – ≤90%: Very good (1)
89% – ≤80%: Good (2)
79% – ≤70%: Satisfactory (3)
69% – ≤60%: Sufficient (4)
59% – 0%: Insufficient (5)
