Workload
To fulfill the six assignments as laid out above, you will have to read a lot. You need to know the topic of your term paper early, and work continuously to take the single steps. You will have to submit a total of six written assignments. These include a report on the first 14 chapters of the book by Kate Turabian on academic writing, written proposals for topic/title and research question; a written table with your arguments on the relevance of your research question(s); a written structure of the literature review; the literature review; and the analytical framework. Details on each of these assignments will be provided via Moodle, and through recorded lectures available on YouTube. You will receive detailed individual feedback on the core assignments above, and we will have real-time sessions to discuss the tasks.

Since all these assignments are closely related to each other, NO LATE SUBMISSION will be possible. Failure to submit an assignment on time will result in grade “5” for that assignment.

You have registered via the electronic registration system of the University of Vienna. This registration, combined with participation in at least one session is equivalent to a legally binding registration for examination. In other words, you will be graded. De-registration for this course will be possible for a limited time in accordance with the regulations of the University of Vienna. Please note: Maintaining your registration for the seminar will be regarded as agreement with these terms. To first semester students: You are strongly discouraged from taking more than one seminar during your first two semesters. The workload for these seminars is very high, and so is the workload for the language courses. One seminar per semester is enough.

The sole purpose of this course is to help you prepare the term paper, which is a key component of the related Seminar on Economic Systems in East Asia (course number 150086, Mondays 15:00-16:30). We will approach this goal through six consecutive steps. First, you will read and discuss part of a book on academic writing. Then, following our EcoS approach, we will do the same for topic/title and research question; relevance of research questions; structure of the literature review; the literature review; and the analytical framework. At the end of this course, you will have the theoretical part of your term paper ready and can use the remaining time until the due date to complete your term papers. Each of the steps involves a written assignment.
IMPORTANT: Obviously, since this course is focusing on preparing your term papers, you need to be registered for this Exercise Course if you want to be admitted to the related Seminar.
