This seminar is aimed at developing the skill to read, understand and interpret Chinese language academic articles covering topics related to Chinese politics and Chinese history. In this sense, the seminar is a good preparation for including results from Chinese language research into a master thesis or learning how to use the method of discourse analysis in the context of Chinese language academic research.
The language of the seminar is mostly English, partly Chinese.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel
Participants are asked to come to class regularly, to actively participate in classroom discussions and to present an article of their own choice for discussion in class. Articles presented by other participants need to be prepared by all participants as a preparation for the discussion. Be prepared to read a minimum of 5 Chinese language academic articles in addition to the article of your own choice.
In addition, participants will have to write a paper comparing a Chinese language article with an article in a language other than Chinese on the same topic. The length and depth of the paper is decided by the student. The language of the paper can be either Chinese or English.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab
The final grade for this course is decided on the following grounds:
1. Regular and active participation: 30%
2. Presentation of one Chinese language article: 30%
3. Paper comparing Chinese and non-Chinese article on the same topic: 40%
