Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This course aims to equip students with a robust knowledge of the key research and scholarly writing skills required for successful study at postgraduate level. It should thus be taken in the first year of MA-level study.

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:
1. Apply skills in systematically locating, evaluating and synthesizing relevant scholarly sources;
2. Employ strategies for reading effectively and efficiently for postgraduate study;
3. Demonstrate skills in using the conventions of academic writing, including appropriate use of referencing and citations;
4. Demonstrate improved capacity for independent learning and critical thinking; and
5. Utilize skills for engaging with specific content in their specialist areas.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

This is a skill-based seminar. In preparation for each unit, students will read relevant book chapters or articles to create the foundation for active participation in class.

The primary output from students is a literature review on an EcoS-related topic provided by the lecturer. In addition, students will be required to provide a critical reflection on their research process for a term paper for a compulsory EcoS module. This should focus on the selection of a topic and development of a research question and can either be retrospective or applied to a module taken simultaneously. Lastly, students will undertake a citation exercise which assesses knowledge and understanding of referencing systems and plagiarism.

A delay of up to 1 week in the submission of the literature review, critical reflection or citation exercise will result in the assessed component being downgraded by one full grade. A delay of up to 2 weeks will result in downgrading by two full grades, and so forth.

Knowledge of an East Asian language is not required.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

The final grade will be calculated as follows:
• Literature review on a given topic (50%)
• Critical reflection on the research process (25%)
• Citation exercise (25%)

The literature review counts as a minimum requirement (“Mindestanforderung”) and must therefore be passed in order to achieve an overall pass for the course.

Active participation in discussions and in-class exercises is integral to students’ success. As such, regular participation in class is mandatory with the following penalties applied to students who miss class sessions: the final grade of students who miss up to three classes over the course of the semester will remain unchanged; four absences will result in the final grade being reduced by one full grade; fives absences will be reduced by two full grades; and so forth.
