Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Recently, researchers inside and outside China have been revisiting the Russian or Soviet influence on the Chinese Revolution. For a Long time, there was a consense between researchers that the victory of the Chinese Revolution was due to the fact that Mao Zedong and the then CCP leadership had found a particular strategy for China and had distanced themselves from the Russian and Soviet model. This argument is now under scrutiny. It is the aim of this seminar to discuss recent developments in the Research on this question, to look into Primary sources related to major turning points in CCP history and assess the state of the art of research on the question of Russian or Soviet influence on the Chinese Revolution.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

We expect that all participants of this seminar attend the seminar regularly; and that they participate in the seminar by choosing a topic from a list of possible presentations to be introduced during the first Meeting in October. This presentation is based on Chinese or non-Chinese secondary literature on the topic. In addition, the participants will devide into reading groups and present one primary document from CCP history by relating it to the research question of the Seminar and interpreting it in light of the relevant secondary literature on the topic. As your term paper, we expect you submit the first presentation in a written form. The paper can be written in either Chinese German oder English.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Participants should be able to read CCP documents as well as Chinese language research articles with the help of a dictionary. This implies that everyone who graduated from or Bachelor's program should be able to fulfill the language requirements. In addition, you should be able to follow and participate in English language academic discussions.

Participation in class stands for 25% of your final grading;
Presentation of group discussions stands for 35% of your final grading;
Term paper stands for 40% of your final grading.

Prüfungsstoff

The term paper should show that you can use the skills and Knowledge taught during the course to give a comprehensive presentation of the state of the art of academic discourse on a topic related to the research question of the Seminar. This skill is of quite some importance for your MA Thesis as it will definitely include a chapter on the state of the art of research.
In terms of length, the paper should not exceed 7000 words (including footnotes).
