Goals and main contents

The Chinese Communist Party is a unique political organization. It supersedes any other political parties in any other countries not only in terms of the size but also of the durability of its monopolistic rule over a sovereign state. Its remarkable success in sustaining its political monopoly has in many aspects attributable to the ways and the mechanisms through which it operates. It is therefore very important for any student who seeks to understand politics and governance in contemporary China to build a good knowledge base about the Chinese Communist Party.

This seminar course will 1) provide students the resources, methods and the forum to establish a structured understanding of the most essential issues concerning the operation of the Chinese Communist Party and 2) guide students to conduct semi-independent research on subjects of interest and to present the research output in both oral and written forms.

Course format

The course consists of ten discussion sessions, covering ten thematic topics.

Each session will be divided into two parts.

In the first part, I will offer a lecture on the key issues concerning the topic. The second part will be a discussion with mandatory participation from the designated student discussants and spontaneous participation from the rest of the class.
