Student participation in discussion is an integral part of this course. Regular participation is thus mandatory. The following rules apply: The final grade remains unchanged in the case of one absence. If you are absent for up to 2 times, the final grade will be reduced by one full grade. If you are absent for up to 3 times, the final grade will be reduced by two full grades, and so forth.
The final grade for the course will be calculated as follows (subject to changes; please refer to the latest version posted on Moodle):
Essay: 50%
Research topic and research question: 20%
Draft concept: 30%
Participation in class discussion: 20%

Prüfungsstoff
In the first part, this seminar is text-based. Accordingly, in preparation of each unit, students will be asked to read and summarize related book chapters. This will create a foundation for active discussion during the seminar. Expect reading about 40 pages or more per week. After finishing part 1, students are asked to write an essay in which they discuss the contents of the readings in relation to their own work and research projects. The essays must be submitted electronically before the unit begins.
In the second part, students are required to develop a research topic, a research ques-tion/hypothesis, and a draft outline of their research project including methodology. The due dates are specified in a separate document. A delay in submission of up to 1 week will result in downgrading by one full grade. A delay in submission of up to 2 weeks will result in downgrading by two full grades, and so forth.
To adjust the workload, we will occasionally skip single units and allot this time to the preparation of the assignments. For details and updates on the requirements see the separate schedule on Moodle.

In the first part of the seminar, we will have an intense discussion of principal matters regarding the writing of academic papers and theses. This will, hopefully, constitute the structured recapitulation of existing knowledge. In the second part, we will apply these skills and approaches to the participants’ specific research projects. In particular, we will focus on finding an appropriate topic, research question, and methodology for the thesis. The seminar concludes with the preparation of a first outline and thus leads right into the preparation of the actual MA or PhD thesis.
