This course uses continuous assessment (hat immanenten Prüfungscharakter), consequently active participation throughout the semester (both in class and outside) heavily influences the grade. Aside from being prepared for class, volunteering for answering and asking questions etc. there will be regular homework -- to be submitted on time. There will also be more comprehensive written and oral mid-term and final exams.Please budget ~8 h/week for self-study.No materials or aids are permitted during tests or exams. Exceptions can be made on request for students with a handicap.

The course total is made up of active participation (10 %), homework (15 %), small essays (15%), mid-term (25 %) and final (35 %) and converted to a grade as follows:> 90 % Excellent (A) [Sehr Gut (1)]
> 80 % Good (B) [Gut (2)]
> 70 % Satisfactory (C) [Befriedigend (3)]
> 60 % Acceptable (D) [Genügend (4)]
<= 60 %: Failed (F) [Nicht Genügend (5)]Attendance is mandatory. No-shows for the first unit will have their registration revoked immediately. Note that a passing grade requires having been present for at least 80 % of lesson time and that tardiness may be counted as absence for the purpose of determining this percentage at the discretion of the lecturer.There is a strict zero tolerance policy on cheating and plagiarism.

Prüfungsstoff
~1 new lesson/session (est., dep. on pace) from the textbook, starting with L9; any additional material covered in class. All tests are cumulative and cover everything that came before, including in the first semester.Mid-term test ( Grammar, Listening and Writing ) will be held in May and final ( Grammar, Listening, Writing and Speaking <5-10 minutes> ) will be held in June. The exact scope of the mid-term and final will be announced ~1 week in advance.

* communicate orally in various everyday situations
* understand basic spoken and written Japanese texts [the latter will require extensive use of dictionaries], including business- or economics-related ones aimed at a general audience
* read a few hundred of the most common kanji
* produce select kinds of written communication [with the help of a computer], e. g. e-mails
* expand on their knowledge of Japanese in self-study, using dictionaries, grammar references etc.The course will also cover everything required to pass the language part of the StEOP exam for Japanese Studies majors, enabling students to take more advanced language courses, if they wish to specialise further [some German req.].Japanese Communication in a Business Environment will continue to focus on constructively building an understanding of Japanese grammar and vocabulary by way of oral exercises and listening comprehension providing a base for the other two courses to build upon.
