Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
By means of systematically reading and discussing selected private letters, published articles and internal talks, this course will explore Mao’s personality and political behavior, and their impact on the Chinese communist revolution and socialist construction. Besides the selected reading materials, students should also read before each class the relevant parts of Mao: The Real Story, to get familiar with background of the reading materials.

We expect that all participants of this seminar attend the seminar regularly; and that they choose one of the following fields for their own contribution to the seminar:
1. History and Theory: Does the writing of history in 20th century China rely on a theory of history?
2. History and Identity: Is 20th century Chinese history a history of Han Chinese?
3. HIstory and Memory: How do we detect differences between state orchestrated historiography and social memory?As your term paper, we expect you to write a paper related to the topic of your choice based on your oral presentation and the feedback you get for that. .

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab
The grade depends on presentation (30%), overall participation (30%) and course paper (40%).
Prüfungsstoff
The term paper addresses the topic of your own choice in terms of the research question related to your topic. You can change the research question if you have reasons to do so.
Your paper should show that you can find the adequate sources, the related theories and useful methods to answer the research question. In terms of length, the paper should not exceed 8000 words but can otherwise be as long as you feel necessary.
