Grading is based on a “continuous assessment of coursework” (“Prüfungsimmanente Lehrveranstaltung”). There are four graded components of this course (% of final grade):1. Attendance and participation (10%)
2. Writing assignment #1: Abstract and literature review (30%)
3. Writing assignment #2: Research proposal and annotated bibliography (30%)
4. Writing assignment #3: Analytical framework (30%)

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab
Positive grades (grade 4 or better) for all formal requirements as listed under “Assessment (Art der Leistungskontrolle)” are a minimum requirement for passing this course.
Grading is based on a “continuous assessment of coursework” (“Prüfungsimmanente Lehrveranstaltung”).The course is divided into two sections.In section one, students will read about the principles of research design and types of empirical research. Specific focus will be devoted to certain qualitative research methods, namely the comparative case study design. Students will be assigned readings and must come to class prepared to discuss them.The second section of the course will be dedicated to applying what was learned in the first section to a research project. Students will be required to write and present a basic research proposal. This will include an abstract, the literature review, and the analytical framework.All written components are meant to support the research paper for the seminar Political Systems in East Asia. Specific guidelines will be provided by the convenor. Depending on the final number of students enrolled, either one-on-one or small group sessions will be conducted with the instructor for research proposal presentations. The class will not meet regularly during the second section. Scheduling for these consultations and the second section will be determined in the first few weeks of class.
