Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This seminar is aimed at discussing the problem of land use in a historical perspective starting out from current issues of land use in the PRC. It is focused on understanding the urgency of the problem of land use in the PRC and relating the problem to the legal issue of property rights. Students are asked to analyze the academic debate on this question as well as the political discussion in the PRC in order to be able to write an opinion paper on “Land Use in the PRC” at the end of the seminar.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Students with a reading and listening ability in Chinese will be provided with the opportunity to enhance their understanding of academic Chinese and asked to use Chinese language materials in preparation of the classes. Students with no knowledge of the Chinese language can participate and contribute by introducing English language books and articles on land use and land reform in China. Participants will be graded by their active participation in class (30%), their oral presentations (20%) and their opinion paper of at least 15 pages to be handed in by July 30, 2011 (50%). The reading list is supposed to help participants to come to a conclusion about the question of whether or not land should be privatized in China.

The seminar is methodologically focused on discourse analysis and supposed to be instrumental in developing the participants’ ability to analyze arguments, development arguments and voice arguments both in oral discussions and in opinion papers
