Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The political “dilemmas” facing China’s rulers refer to the impossible choice between two opposing approaches of governance. One is to tighten control. The outcome is that it may lead to more regulatory failure and political resentment, which in turn threatens the autocratic rule. The other is to loosen control. The outcome is that it is likely to trigger a process of democratization, which in turn also threatens the autocratic rule.
This course addresses three topics, as indicated in the course title, all of which are associated with the ruling Chinese Communist Party’s “dilemma”. Succession will connect the past with the present, discussing succession rules and practices in imperial palaces and behind the high walls of Zhongnanhai. Under the topic of protest, we will discuss the democratic movement in 1989 side by side with the series of protests in Hong Kong in 2014-2020. For public opinion, we will discuss the tendency of polarization of public sphere in China.
