Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This module is designed to introduce students to the basic notions of Usage Based Linguistics and Construction Grammar. Construction Grammar is a family of approaches to syntax and lexicon based on the assumption that lexical items are learned pairings of form and meaning. The fundamental notion that underlies all constructionist approaches is that constructions constitute the units of the grammatical analysis. Grammar does not involve any transformational or derivational component. This is a ‘usage-based’ conception of language and under this view, the linguistic knowledge consists of constructions that emerge from the speaker's linguistic experience.

At the end of the course, students should be able to formulate relevant research questions and explain what the following notions refer to:

- Usage-based theory, language acquisition and cognition;
- Usage-based theory and exemplar representation;
- Construction Grammar vs. tranformational grammar;
- Argument structure in Construction Grammar;
- Construction Grammar and productivity;
- Grammar formalization and Construction Grammar;

The following constructionist approaches will be covered in some more detail

- Construction Grammar (Goldberg, 1995)
- Radical Construction Grammar (Croft, 1999)
- Sign-based Construction Grammar (Sag, 2010, 2012)
- Simpler Syntax and Parallel Architecture (Culicover and Jackendoff, 2005)
