Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This course introduces the most important basic concepts in statistics and their application to biological and behavioral research. It covers topics in univariate statistics (univariate descriptive statistics and graphical display of data, correlation, regression, hypothesis tests, ANOVA) and multivariate statistics (PCA, factor analysis, discriminant analysis & classification, MANOVA, CCA, PLS). The course focuses on a geometric understanding of the methods and on a critical discussion of their application for scientific research.
The practical part should foster the understanding of theoretical concepts via basic examples from different research fields (mainly biology related research topics). We will try to "produce" our data, visualize and analyze them.
Expectations and learning outcomes from the practical part:
- overview of the plethora of statistical methodologies
- use of different statistical programs (R, R Studio)
- Scientific visualization in practice
- Applied scientific reasoning and critical discussion of their statistical methodologies for scientific research

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Due to the exceptional situation related to the covid crisis, course will start as an online course, involving online lectures, discussion groups, and learning from a scrip that will be provided. The final grade is based on homework exercises about theoretical and practical aspects and on a final exam.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Minimum requirements for passing the course:
- Homework assignments about the theoretical part (25%)
- Exam about the theoretical part (25%)
- Homework assignments about the practical part (50%)
Both the theoretical and the practical parts must be positive.
