The Public School and its Problems

Many of the key problems facing the public school in the United States are similar to the problems facing the public schools of democratic societies across the world. This course examines several macro-problems that involve the school, including the school achievement gap that is commonly witnessed across socioeconomic levels, the role testing (and measurement) in the conduct of the school curriculum, the influence of family factors on achievement. and the practical relationship between the school's mandate to shape a common culture while still offering diversifying experiences.

Objectives

In this course, students will be expected to understand:

- the main issues involved in the documented school achievement gap witnessed across socioeconomic levels and contrast them with the achievement gap concerns in Europe

- the effect that high stakes testing mechanisms have on the nature of the school experience

- the influence of family factors on school achievement

- the role that the school plays in establishing both unifying and diversifying identities in society
