After having carefully reviewed the situation, I decided to teach this class fully online this semester. There will be a blend of (shorter) synchronous online sessions on BigBlueButton (via Moodle) and a series of asynchronous online tasks (“e-tivities”) that you will be working on individually and as a group. Together we will create an online learning community and I greatly look forward to your contributions to this class. Online teaching offers a lot of possibilities for meaningful interactions and I intend to explore these possibilities with you as a group to discuss our important and timely course topics.
Please note that the time slots for our synchronous sessions will stay roughly the same, but that the frequency and duration is subject to some modifications. More details about our synchronous sessions will be provided during our first online class meeting on October 16 which will take place via the video conference BigBlueButton on our Moodle course (attendance required). You will need to participate in the video conference verbally, so please make sure you have a working microphone and ideally also a webcam – it’s also nicer if we get to know each other with video. Please e-mail me if you anticipate any problems ahead of time. Our Moodle course will be available as of October 12. There you will find more details regarding our first online meeting and our first “e-tivitiy”.- Freitag 16.10. 15:15 - 17:45 Digital

The goal of this course is to familiarize students with discourses on the social construction of whiteness, and the respective intersections with categories such as race, gender, class, and religion as well as with critical multiculturalism, diversity, and social justice pedagogy. Students will gain a contextual framework through relevant secondary literature, and acquire tools to properly analyze situations (educational and otherwise) and cultural artifacts (literature, film, etc.) from a perspective that incorporates critical pedagogy and critical media literacy. Students will be practicing the application of relevant theory and engage in critical interpretations of 'de/constructions' of systems of power, privilege, and invisibility, all related to the social construction of whiteness as an 'unmarked' norm in Western societies and the affirmation of diversity in its many different shapes and forms. Students will be exposed to different approaches towards diversity in education.Methodology:
The methodology of this course is based on critical pedagogy. In addition to short input by the course instructor, which will explain and contextualize relevant theories and historical contexts, you are expected to actively participate in class dialogue and group activities. We will also engage in close readings of assigned texts and the analysis of relevant audio-visual material. You need to prepare the assigned readings and viewings in advance and be ready to share your thoughts in class and through assignments as specified throughout the semester. Overall, this course is designed as an interactive classroom where you will be constantly provoked to engage in critical thinking.
