Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This course will follow a hybrid model, containing both live lectures in lecture hall C and online lectures. In case of a lockdown, we will switch to a purely digital course.
The course will be taught partly in German (lectures by Dr. Alexa Müllner-Huber) and partly in English (lectures by Dr. Federica Riva).
This course aims to train students at proficiently performing the steps necessary to conduct an empirical study in psychology when starting from nothing but a designated topic (see below). This is a 2-semester course program. Attendance to summer semester 2021 course is not mandatory but strongly recommended. This first semester aims to prepare the students to conduct an experiment or a survey for their bachelor project in summer semester 2021.
The steps:
(1) Become familiar with a topic
(2) Find a research question and formulate hypotheses
(3) Identify and assess the methods available
(4) Design your study
(5) Implement your study
(6) Conduct the study
Program: The students will be taught the steps 1 to 6. The students will be requested to produce a group-based report for each step from 1 to 4 and will be evaluated on this basis. Groups of 4-5 students are to be created.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Grading system: 5 group reports (written in English, 800 words, bibliographical references excluded) counting 60% in total; one oral presentation per group counting 20%; writing peer-feedback on another group’s reports counting 5%; individual participation in class and online counting 15%.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Good language skills in English and German. Attendance is compulsory; students may be absent for no more than two lectures. A positive assessment (i.e., obtaining at least 60% of the maximum achievable points) on all homeworks / assessment criteria is necessary for a positive overall grade.

Prüfungsstoff

To guarantee the teachers’ expertise in researched topics and to constrain the vastness of scientific literature, this year’s course focuses on the following topics:
Three groups supervised by Alexa Müllner-Huber: hypnosis, empathy.
Three groups supervised by Federica Riva: empathy across the adult life-span, interoception across the adult life-span.

Literatur

Introductory literature on hypnosis: Oakley DA, Halligan PW. Hypnotic suggestion: opportunities for cognitive neuroscience. Nat Rev Neurosci 2013;14:564-76.
