Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

In this course we will review the fundamentals of positive psychology and differentiate empirical, reproducible positive psychology from ‘pop’ psychology. We will investigate the main theories of positive psychology and examine the criticisms against the movement. We will examine specific positive emotions and positive characteristics more closely, defining each emotions and examining the impact of each emotion in different educational contexts.

The course has the following objectives:
- Understand the aims of positive psychology and differentiate it from 'pop' psychology.
- Understand the emerging position of positive psychology within the rest of psychology.
- Identify and understand various approaches to positive psychology.
-Identify and understand various positive emotions and positive characteristics.
- Understand and apply practical positive psychology exercises.
- Apply research findings regarding positive psychology, positive emotions, and positive characteristics to specific learning contexts.

Course Learning Objectives

1. Understand the main theories of positive psychology and the arguments for and against each theory.
2. Differentiate between valid, empirical positive psychology research and ‘pop’ psychology.
3. Differentiate between positive psychology and other fields of psychology.
4. Identify and explain numerous positive emotions and positive characteristics.
5. Understand the impact positive emotions and positive characteristics can have in different educational contexts.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Video Presentation: For the first assignment of this course, you need to make a 10 minute video presentation on a specific positive emotion or positive characteristic. The video has to be pre-recorded. You may work either alone or in a team of two to create your video. Each video will have a unique topic, you may choose your topic here: https://doodle.com/poll/nidtxzbtyhwhrugd?utm_source=poll&utm_medium=link. For more information on the content of your video and how the video presentation will be assessed please see the Google Drive folder of this course. Lastly, please note that your videos will be played to the class during the course.Essay: Each student needs to submit a 2000-2500 word review of the literature on a specific positive emotion/characteristic in a specific learning environment. Each student will have a unique topic for their essay, the available topics can be chosen at: https://doodle.com/poll/a9ia85wfac3efkh9?utm_source=poll&utm_medium=link. Format for written work:All written assignments will be use Times New Roman, font size 12, double lined spacing. Please use APA referencing style (version 6 or 7 is acceptable, just make sure it is consistent).Plagiarism We will be using Ithenticate with this course. I will submit each of your assignments to Ithenticate after you submit them. I will be in contact with those who have excessive amounts of plagiarism in their written work. Please note that there is an automatic penalty for plagiarism in your assignment (see the marking sheets). In addition, should you be guilty of blatant and excessive plagiarism, the matter will be taken up with your course administrator and I will not provide any mark for your assignment. Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Lecture Requirements: Attendance is compulsory. Please contact me as soon as possible if you cannot attend a lecture. Homework: There will be short homework exercises set after each lesson. This can take the form of reading a journal article for in-class discussion, practicing a positive psychology technique, or watching a video. Homework will not contribute towards your course mark and is meant to increase your engagement and understanding of the course. The content of homework exercises will be discussed in the next lesson.

Prüfungsstoff

Literatur

There is no prescribed text book for this course. The course will be predominantly based on the Oxford Handbook of Positive Psychology (2nd Edition), by S. J. Lopez and C. R. Snyder (Eds.). However, you do not need to purchase this book as we will be using powerpoint slides and journal articles in the course.
