Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Aim. The aim is to acquire essential knowledge to conduct appropriate empirical quantitative scientific research in experimental psychology.

Content. The course will build up on TEWA-1 course. The research topic will focus on the mechanisms of empathy. Social dynamics and clinical aspects will be considered. Topics and methodologies aim at creating a bridge between clinical psychology and cognitive neuroscience.

Methods. Supervised students will implement an internet-based behavioural experiment conceived in TEWA-1. Split in groups they will analyse the collected data to test their hypotheses resulting in a group final poster and individual report.
Specifically, activities of TEWA-2 will involve:
- Conduct a study:
--- materials and task preparation
--- recruitment and management
- Prepare and analyse data:
--- data preparation: cleaning and manipulating data sets – using
Excel
--- data visualization: scatter plots, bar charts, line charts, etc. –
using JASP/SPSS and Excel
--- data analysis: t-test, ANOVA, correlations, regressions etc. –
using JASP/SPSS
- Gain an understanding of the state-of-the-art knowledge about
the empathic processing instrumental to frame, interpret and
discuss the results of the study
- Present the results:
--- Written report preparation
--- Poster preparation

The course entails face-to-face classes. In compliance with the current regulations, room capacities and minimal distances are to be respected, as well as potential participation rules or restrictions that might change on a day-to-day basis.
Digital conference can be offered along with regular/in person lecture to those who cannot physically attend and that have pandemic-related reasons (e.g., vulnerable people that could not be vaccinated, people living together with vulnerable people and that want to minimize their infection risk despite being vaccinated themselves, or people who cannot participate, as they have to respect travel restrictions or currently applying quarantine rules).

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Presence; active and constructive participation in class and online; proactive work group; practical assignments; oral and poster presentation.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Upon attendance (minimum 80%):
• Active and constructive participation 20%
• Ability to work in group 10%
• Written report 50%
• Poster presentation 20%

Prüfungsstoff

Reading of the relevant literature, development of the skills taught during the course, presence and active participation in class conducive to successful planning (1), carrying out of (2), analysis (3), and written and visual/oral presentation (4) of the research project.
