Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Course description:
In this guided reading course, we will take a thorough look at EU institutions and actors, processes happening within and related to the EU as well as theories and concepts in order to carry out scientific analyses. After that we will focus on two specific policy areas: the EU’s foreign and digital policies.

Methods:
Reading of academic literature as well as policy briefs and policy papers (using the ‘PQ4R’ technique)
Presentations
Discussions in different groups and formats

Goals:
After attending the course, carrying out all assignments conscientiously and participating in an active manner, students should be able to

• approach and read academic literature as well as policy papers/briefs in a systematic and
critical way
• describe and explain the workings of the EU’s institutions
• describe and explain the covered theories and concepts and
• use those for the analysis of current issues concerning e.g. EU policy-making or institutions

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Students are required to
• do the compulsory reading using the PQ4R technique (the technique will be presented and explained in the first session), be prepared for class and participate in the discussions. This counts for 5 % of the final grade.
• hand in the PQ4R tasks twice per term (to be uploaded on moodle). This counts for 20 % of the final grade.
• deliver one short presentation (as a group or individually – depending on the number of course participants) related to the required reading of the respective class unit and triggering as well as moderating the discussion within class. This counts for 20 % of the final grade.
• give an oral summary of the reading covered and issues raised in the class unit in the week before, elaborating on the relevance of the topic and issues as well as relating those to the reading and subject of the current course. (to be done by each student once per term, as a group or individually, depending on the number of course participants). This counts for 5 % of the final grade.
• submit a term paper at the end of the term (2000 words, +/- 10 %) This counts for 50 % of the final grade.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Students are required to attend all classes. If you miss a class because of illness, please bring a doctor’s note. Students not attending the first class without notification and excuse as well as proof (e.g. doctor’s note) will be unsubscribed.
Students are required to submit ALL assignments and to stick to the given instructions in order to receive a positive grade. There will always be detailed instructions – you are supposed to read those carefully and to adhere to them.
