Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This seminar will examine and analyse public opinion in a comparative context, with particular focus on political attitudes and beliefs in Europe and United States. Topics will include the conceptualisation and measurement of public opinion, the process of public opinion formation and the evaluation of how public opinion survey research is conducted.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Students are required to attend all meetings. It is allowed to miss up to 2 classes, but students must attend the first class. Students are expected to complete the assigned readings each week and be ready for class discussions. This means that class participants should be prepared to summarize and discuss any required reading when called upon.
Grading of the course will be based on the following three components:
(1) 30% - Class attendance, participation in class discussions and 4 weekly home assignments.
(2) 15 % - Mid-term test
(3) 15 % - Final test
(4) 40 % - Timely submission of a term paper (min. 3000, max. 4000 words).

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

You can only pass if certain minimal requirements (four weekly assignments submitted in time, mid-term and final tests, attendance, and submission of essay in time) are fulfilled.
