Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

With the Lisbon Treaty in place and the European Union increasingly involved in international crisis management and stabilization operations in places near and far, this seminar will focus on the role of the EU in peace and security as a regional actor with global aspirations. We will be looking at what the EU's security policy is and how it works, its civilian and military aspects, the different political and institutional actors, its interactions with different strands of EU's External Action, and how the EU contributes (or fails to contribute) to the functioning of multilateral governance.

Evaluation of student performance:
- active student participation in class discussion 25%
- oral presentation 25%
- essay exposé 10%
- essay 40%

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Prüfungsstoff

As a proponent of active learning I will encourage active student participation during classes. The seminar will evolve in a mix of classroom discussions, essay writing and student presentations. These lasts will be organised in the form of panels (chair, participants and discussant)
