The professor may decide in individual cases that a bilateral discussion of the paper is necessary which shall be relevant for the mark and shall be documented. If the student is incapable to speak about the contents well enough the seminar paper shall be market negativly or "X" - "Nichtbeurteilung wegen unerlaubter Hilfsmittel".

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Goal of this "Spezialisierungsseminar" is to deepen the students' understanding of European Integration in times of crisis: Where and how does integration continue? Where and how to non-decisions happen and even possible breakdown?

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

The students' work will include, most importantly: several practical exercises (researching high quality articles and books, assembling lists of references, summaries of articles and relevant public events); to prepare and present, in various stages, a seminar paper regarding one or several EU policies, probably in working groups.

Methods will include, inter alia, reading and discussion of primary sources and secondary literature, and research via the internet. Regular and active participation in the seminar is indispensable.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Course requirements include regular attendance and participation, several exercises (e.g. literature search on the internet and in library catalogues), the development of a research outline to be discussed in class, usually a presentation of the draft paper, and a research paper (often collaborative work). Furthermore, students may be asked to attend relevant public events and provide summaries or discussion papers in which central arguments of required readings are critically discussed. Intensive work during the semester! Written assignments 20%, active participation 30% (max. absence one half day), seminar paper 50%.
