The European political space has changed dramatically over the past twenty years. In this course, we will focus on political parties and how they adapt to changes in their environment. In particular, we will study how parties react to the emergence of new issues and cleavages and changing voter preferences. We will also examine the development of new parties and what determines their success. Through readings, discussions, and written work, students will gain a thorough understanding of the challenges that European parties face in the 21st century and what the implications of these challenges are for political competition and representation.
