Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
The seminar "Scientific Skills" provides students with in-depth knowledge on all single steps of the research process. During the seminar topics such as the academic system, academic publishing, peer-reviewing, critical thinking and reading of scientific papers, and the formal academic standards for writing a paper or research proposal and holding a presentation will be covered. Students will familiarize themselves with the essential skills for designing a research setup, deriving conceptualizations, measuring constructs, academic writing and presenting. The seminar will also address core debates in the Social Sciences, for example, the establishment of causality.

The following requirements should be met:
- Active participation in class
- Submission of assignments (e.g., research proposal, peer reviews, literature quizzes) and presentation of the developed research proposalThe use of artificial intelligence (AI; e.g., ChatGPT): AI tools are only permitted in accordance with the University of Vienna guidelines. The extent of the concrete use of AI tools in this seminar will be communicated at the beginning of the course. To ensure good scientific practice, a grade-relevant oral reflection on the submitted tasks may be required.
