Grading scheme:
The grading of the course is based on the separate assessment of different tasks on a scale of 1-5.
Preparation and active participation (incl. attendance): 30 %, assessed individually
Group work: 20 %, assessed as group work
Assignment reports (incl. formalia, delivery on time): 30 %, assessed individually
Assignment essays (incl. formalia, delivery on time): 20 %, assessed individually
To successfully complete the course, a weighted average of at least 4,5 is required.
Important Grading Information:
If not explicitly noted otherwise, all requirements mentioned in the grading scheme and the attendance regulations must be met. If a required task is not fulfilled, e.g. a required assignment is not handed in or if the student does not meet the attendance requirements, this will be considered as a discontinuation of the course. In that case, the course will be graded as 'fail' (5), unless there is a major and unpredictable reason for not being able to fulfill the task on the student's side (e.g. a longer illness). In such a case, the student may be de-registered from the course without grading. It is the student’s responsibility to communicate this in a timely manner, and to provide relevant evidence to their claims if necessary. Whether this exception applies is decided by the vice-director of studies responsible for the master programme.
If any requirement of the course has been fulfilled by fraudulent means, be it for example by cheating at an exam, plagiarizing parts of a written assignment or by faking signatures on an attendance sheet, the student's participation in the course will be discontinued, the entire course will be graded as 'not assessed' and will be entered into the electronic exam record as 'fraudulently obtained'. Self-plagiarism, particularly re-using own work handed in for other courses, will be treated likewise.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab
The seminar aims at establishing a sensitivity towards shared elements of scientific work as well as different knowledge production processes and styles in scientific research in order to enable the development of personal research interests and research questions within the master studies courses Science-Technology-Society. Beyond this, it is open to all students interested in knowledge production processes.
Prüfungsstoff
Central to this seminar are excursions to research institutions. We will explore "research-in- the-making" by visiting and meeting researchers in their working environment and by investigating the conditions and requirements of knowledge production: What do scientists do? How do they do it? How do their results find its public(s)? What is an interesting approach from an STS perspective?
With the help of selected literature and institutional and autobiographical background information participants will have to prepare each excursion and to reflect their experiences afterwards. Students are encouraged to experiment with the multi-medial documentation and presentation of their observations.
Furthermore, this seminar offers a glance at the heterogeneity of contemporary research cultures, respective methodological and discursive practices. We will explore differences and similarities of the observed fields and maybe even defy the conventions of the traditional divide into natural sciences on one hand and social sciences and humanities on the other hand.

In this seminar we will visit researchers in their working environment and thus have the opportunity to observe and discuss how scientific knowledge is shaped by practices, by locations and by technologies - and last but not least by the humans who are making use of them, who interact with each other, share some premises on their work and decide which kinds of research questions are considered as worthwhile to pursue.
