Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This discussion-based graduate seminar introduces advanced students to the rich history and present challenges of the western style "techno-science project" when it crosses developmental borders. Central to the understanding of present circumstances and future opportunities is the impact of new information and communication technologies (ICTs). But first we embark on an intellectual journey through pre-colonial, colonial and post-colonial phases. Throughout this journey, students will be challenged to formulate their own understanding of the modes and outcomes of science in far off places by imagining science in developing regions from its peripheral vantage point. This seminar will treat both the development of Third World science communities and the diffusion of western technologies in the regions they inhabit, climaxing with a combination of the two to ask the ultimate question: Will the worldwide diffusion of the Internet lead to a symmetrical global scientific community?
