Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Aim: The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the overview of concepts and processes of return migration and post-return embeddedness in Southern Africa.

Learning Outcomes:
At the end of this course, student should be able to;
1. Critically discuss and evaluate various theoretical approaches and concepts associated with return migration
2. Describe the evolution of migratory movements in the Southern African region, as facilitated by the evolution of coloniality, state-building, and resource extraction in the second half of the 19th century
3. Assess and analyze political and sociological aspects of 'return' narratives in selected countries in Southern Africa, and relate them to narratives in the Global North
3. Contrast return experiences in Southern Africa with conceptions and assumptions of state-sponsored return and reintegration programmes in Europe

Content:
The course will be organized in following five parts
• Histories and discourses of migration in Southern Africa
• Socio-cultural and political discourses of migration in Southern Africa: focus on South Africa
• Return Migration: Theories and Concepts
• "Return" and "Development" in Southern Africa
• Return Experiences in Zimbabwe

Methods:

- Input from the Course Lead (with student discussion),
- Discussion formats (plenary and small group)
- Presentation of prepared material (individual/groups)

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Assessment for this course will be based the two components:

1. A reflection paper
2. A class presentation

For successful completion of the course, participants are expected to meet the following minimum requirements:
• Regular attendance,
• Active participation in class discussions,
• Individual/group presentation of a selected reading,
• A written reflection
