Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Goals, content and method of the course
The course focuses on the research of fans, their activities and contributions in a participatory culture as well as research objects that include a feminist and/or queer feminist perspective. Students are introduced to the main directions of study of fans and their activities in connection with the audience studies and puts them in connection with the field of feminist studies. Fan studies are a relatively widespread research area in the world, and therefore the course aims to expand the awareness and knowledge among participating students. The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the basic concepts, authoritative and important names of researchers in this field (Fiske, Jenkins, Hall, Hills, ...). Course works and explains in more detail the concepts and terms such as fan, fandom, fan fiction, fan art, fan speak, feminist and queer feminist studies, participatory culture, and more. It examines and explains the research of fan groups (in-depth interviews, questionnaires) and presents the results and findings in demonstration studies. The course also includes an open discussion on each topic, where students can express themselves and demonstrate their fan participation on the given examples. The output of the course is the elaboration of a semester work on pre-agreed topics and their subsequent presentation.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

1. Responses to assigned articles
Each week students will be asked to write a 250-350 word response to one of the readings assigned for that class. These responses will be briefly discussed in the beggining of the class. In the response students should be focusing on one of the following:
A. Briefly explain how the article is related to the topics covered in class and how it enriches the field of fan studies.
B. Focus on a specific term (s) in the article and link them to the issues covered in class.
C. Define the part in the article with which the student does not identify or does not agree with it and explain why this is the case.
D. Focus on the author (s) of the article and briefly describe how important their specific article is for the field of fan studies.
[20%]
2. Final Paper (2,500 words):
Students will be asked to make a sustained and rigorous intervention into a theoretical issue or topic from the course and asked to draw directly from the insights and arguments made in the readings/videos and discussions. In their work, they can focus on any aspect, theoretical study, or concept that we have covered in class. I recommend choosing a topic that is close to the student. The paper should focus mainly on the connection with fan studies and their importance in the researched issues in connection with feminism, queer studies and the issue of gender. The final paper can also be processed in the form of a survey, research, questionnaire, etc.(student will present partial findings and/or research results) I encourage students to discuss the topic of the final paper in advance.
[40%]
3. Presentation of Final Paper:
You will be asked to make a short in-class presentation about the work you are preparing for your final paper.
4. Activity in class:
The course is designed as a seminar, which means there are high expectations for participation in our group discussions. Students need to prepare the readings and papers in advance of each class meeting and review them before class.
[15%]
5. Participation and attendance:
Regular attendance is required. You are permitted one absence that should be reserved for a day that you are ill or for an emergency. If you miss any additional classes, then you need to present me with documentation of illness or emergency. Your grade will drop two points for each additional absence that you are unable to verify with documentation. [10%]
