240514 SE Rastafari, Black Lives Matter and Garveyism (P4) (2022W)

The Seminar attempts a comparative literature study on the correlation and historical connection of Black Resistance movements and social philosophies of Black liberation from white supremacy. Various forms of Black Nationalism and Black Consciousness contributed to the current Black Lives Matter activism. Among these Marcus Garvey’s „Race First“-doctrine influencing the Rastafari key imperatives of “Equal Rights and Justice” and Black Supremacy, which recur in activist challenges of BLM against persistent forms of racism, discrimination, and disenfranchisement.

The seminar tries to achieve a historical reconstruction and contextualization in favor over a mere juxtaposition of different activist approaches. It will thereby discuss and examine struggles over identities from a praxeological perspective. Special focus will place special emphases on the three philosophies/activist movements of Rastafari, Black Lives Matter and Garveyism and their connectedness as well as divergencies but will not be limited to these. It may include a wide spectrum of schools of thought from Quilombismo to the Civil Rights Movement, Black Panthers, or various movements of the landless. Questions of Inclusion and Exclusion, as well as Universalism and Particularism will be cross-cutting issues of consideration.
